THE EALING ROAD

"At the weekends it feels like a festival here"–

Insights from the famous Ealing Road in Wembley

On a fine day in December 2020 Rubina Charalambous from Brent Council, the sound artist Hardi Kurda and the curator Rolf Killius visited shopkeepers, crafts people, restaurant owners and Hindu temple and Muslim mosque devotees along the famous Ealing Road in Wembley.

Ealing Road, frequently called ‘Little India’ is a long and busy road connecting Wembley Central and Alperton stations. Thousands of people come here every day and you find it all: Colourful saris and elegant suits for your wedding; expensive jewellery for the loved one; exotic fruits and vegetable from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; fine dining and sumptuous take-away serving authentic food from any part of South Asia; informative advice for investment, banking and property; talkative tailors creating fashion to your individual needs. As one interviewee summarised it, “at the weekends it feels like a festival here.”

Rubie, Hardi and Rolf met numerous residents and businesses in this street and asked them about their lives.
